The final piece of the puzzle is here. Captain America: The First Avengers kicks in as the last instalment before Marvel’s The Avengers kicks in in 2012.
But to all you non-geeks out there, what the hell is Captain America is about?
I present to you the synopsis:
Captain America: The First Avenger" will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America. As Captain America, Rogers joins forces with Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) to wage war on the evil HYDRA organization, led by the villainous Red Skull (Hugo Weaving.)
But crud, who the hell wants to read the synopsis rite? I think this video sums it up better:
Captain America: The First Avenger is essentially your fairly standard, straight-forward, run-of-the-mill superhero movie. It follows the basic necessary plot of a superhero origin movie, but adds nothing ground-breaking to the mix. However, the movie provides a fresh spin on these familiar beats by setting the backdrop of the film in the ol’ vintage 1940s. The film is also lifted by its spectacular cast, particularly Johnny Storm, Hayley Atwell, Agent K, and That Psycho dude from The Lovely Bones.
Johnny Storm, essentially, manages to bring out the sympathetic aspect of Steve Rogers convincingly, presented as a down-to-earth 90-pound skinny dude (that’s me!) who just wants to serve his country. Meanwhile, Hayley Atwell, the hot chick in the uniform (thank god I don’t have any uniform fetish), was an engaging female lead, without any cleavage exposing, ass-strutting, pokie sporting, or being slutty for that matter.
But, this strength is also the weak point of the film: the over-reliance on actors to sell the story. While Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter are well written, the supporting characters were not so much. Col. Phillips is pretty much your stock gruff but caring boss, Dr. Erskine being the wacky doctor, Bucky is the douche best-friend, Arnim Zola the coward scientist and Red Skull the psycho villain. There were some interesting potential that the story could’ve went such as the relationship of Bucky and Cap post-serum and even the exploration of Red Skull’s dark side – only hinted slightly in the movie.
Not to mention several coincidences that happens early on the movie; How did Bucky knew Steve was getting beaten up in that particular alley? Is that like his favourite spot for getting his ass kicked? Does he gets beaten a lot at this alley? Which leads to another question: Is Steve a masochist? If he is, I guess that’s why he likes to provoke bullies even though he’s a 90-pound skinny ass dude. Cause he likes ‘em rough.
Oh shit, I’m rambling.
Another coincident is Dr. Erskine just happened to pass by as Steve was giving his heart-felt speech about how he wants to go to war for his country to Bucky. Anyways, back to the main point.
Another problem of the movie is the director fails to deliver emotional impacts on key scenes including, from the top: Cap’s first reveal, Bucky’s death, Cap’s first kiss with Peggy, Red Skull’s death, and even the part where Cap crashes the plane into the ice. All of them were half-assed. I mean, even Red Skull died by just vanishing into thin air because he hold the Tessarect with his hand. By the end of the movie, the movie rushes itself towards introducing Cap to the modern world – a scene which felt more like a self-promotion for Avengers.
This movie is recommended if you're into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU as they like to call it), a fan who's longing for a new portrayal of The Captain, someone who just wants a decent action flick, or just someone who just happened to have lots of money lying around.
